Rishabh Pant's Remarkable Achievement

Rishabh Pant has showcased his exceptional talent once again, bouncing back from a less impressive IPL 2025 season. Following a stunning Test century, he has now surpassed former Indian captain MS Dhoni in the tally of Test centuries scored by a wicketkeeper-batter for India. This marks Pant's seventh Test century, with four of them coming against England. During the third day of the first Test, he made a significant contribution by catching centurion Ollie Pope off the bowling of Prasidh Krishna, which also earned him a place among the elite Indian wicketkeeper-batters with 150 Test catches.

Milestone Achievements

Pant is now among the few wicketkeepers to achieve this milestone, joining the ranks of MS Dhoni and Syed Kirmani. He reached 150 catches in just 44 matches, while Dhoni achieved 256 catches in 90 matches, and Kirmani had 160 catches in 88 games. Pant's record-breaking performance continued in the Leeds Test, where he became the most prolific Indian wicketkeeper to score a century in a Test match, achieving his seventh century on the second day against England. He hit a six on the first ball of the 100th over of India's innings, marking his return to form after scoring 109 against Bangladesh in September 2024.

Comparative Statistics

Dhoni accumulated 4,876 runs with six centuries and 33 fifties in 90 Tests, averaging 38.09, making him the leading run-scorer among Indian wicketkeeper-batters in Tests. In contrast, Pant has scored 134 runs off 134 balls (12 fours and 6 sixes) in this innings, totaling 3,000 runs with 15 fifties in 44 Tests, averaging nearly 44. Following him on the list are Wriddhiman Saha with two centuries, and Syed Kirmani and Farokh Engineer, each with one century, along with Nayan Mongia.

Match Highlights

Pant's impressive innings of 134 runs off 178 balls contributed to India's total of 471 runs against England under the new captaincy of Shubman Gill. On the second day of England's innings, Jasprit Bumrah excelled with figures of 3/48, helping India maintain a strong position.
