D Gukesh Achieves Historic Victory Over Magnus Carlsen at Norway Chess 2025

Gukesh's Remarkable Comeback

World Champion Dommaraju Gukesh, widely recognized as Gukesh, achieved an impressive victory against former World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen during Round 6 of the ongoing Norway Chess 2025 tournament, dramatically reversing the game from a losing position on Sunday.

This victory marks Gukesh's inaugural classical win against the Norwegian grandmaster. At just 19 years old, he has become the second Indian player to defeat Carlsen in the tournament's history, following Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa.

Gukesh Turns the Tables

Throughout the match, Carlsen maintained a dominant position over Gukesh. However, as the game progressed, he faltered under pressure, allowing the young player to seize the opportunity and secure the win.

Climbing the Rankings

Following this victory, D Gukesh ascended to the third position in the Norway Chess 2025 standings with a total of 8.5 points, now trailing just one point behind Carlsen and American player Fabiano Caruana.

Previously, on May 27, the highly anticipated Round One clash at Norway Chess 2025 saw Magnus Carlsen triumph over reigning World Champion D Gukesh in a thrilling match, marking their first classical encounter since Gukesh claimed the world title and Carlsen's return to individual classical chess after nearly a year.

Gukesh's Coach Praises His Performance

In response to the surprising victory, Gukesh's coach, Grandmaster Vishnu Prasanna, commended the young player's determination and tenacity.

“We must acknowledge Gukesh's persistence and ingenuity. He was aware of his precarious position for a long time, yet he continued to fight. As time dwindled, he found more opportunities to turn the situation around. While winning may not have been his initial goal, I believe he is thrilled with the outcome,” Vishnu Prasanna remarked. This win has intensified the excitement of the tournament as the competition for the top position heats up in the final rounds.
