Sunil Gavaskar Expresses Grief Over Bengaluru Stampede Tragedy

Sunil Gavaskar Shares His Condolences
Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed deep sorrow regarding the tragic stampede that occurred outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, resulting in over 30 injuries and 11 fatalities. He recognized the strong emotions fans have carried over the years, eagerly awaiting the trophy that the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have yet to secure.
RCB's Performance and Support for Victims
Gavaskar commended RCB's performance in IPL 2025, noting their remarkable achievements have garnered significant admiration. He extended heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the incident. In response to the tragedy, RCB announced a compensation of INR 10 lakh for each victim's family, demonstrating their support.
RCB's Long Wait for a Title
Reflecting on RCB's long journey, Gavaskar stated, 'Had RCB won the trophy in the early years, the emotional response would not have been as intense after an 18-year wait. Other teams have celebrated victories with less fervor, perhaps because their fans did not endure such a prolonged wait. The slogan 'Ee saala cup naamde' felt like a burden for the team. This year, with that slogan less prominent, the team showcased exceptional cricket, much of it away from their home crowd.'
Fans' Prayers for RCB's Success
Gavaskar noted, 'They achieved victories in every away game, setting a new IPL record. It's no surprise that home fans wanted to honor them with a special ovation. My heartfelt condolences go out to those who lost loved ones. The prayers of fans can indeed alter fortunes, and it's clear that the support from their loved ones played a role in bringing the elusive Cup to Bengaluru.'
Heartbreaking Loss of Lives
'What a tragedy! The loss of lives due to the stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium is truly heartbreaking. All those individuals sought was a chance to see the players who have brought them immense joy over the years, especially in recent months. After 18 years of hoping for the IPL Trophy, it was finally within reach,' he remarked.
Understanding Fans' Emotions
'It is completely understandable that their joy knew no bounds, and they wished to express it to their heroes. Many fans desire to see their idols up close, perhaps even take a quick photo. Haven't we all been fans at some point, wanting to connect with those we admire?' Gavaskar concluded.
