Sophie Devine, the captain of the New Zealand women's cricket team and a prominent player for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), has announced her decision to retire from One Day Internationals (ODIs) following the upcoming 50-over World Cup scheduled in India and Sri Lanka later this year. Despite stepping away from ODIs, the 35-year-old allrounder will remain available for T20 internationals, having signed a flexible, informal contract with New Zealand Cricket.

A Significant Transition in Women's Cricket

This announcement coincides with New Zealand's release of its central contract list for the women's team, where Devine will not be included due to her retirement from the longer format. However, she will continue to lead the team during the World Cup, after which a new captain will take over for the subsequent ODI matches, starting with New Zealand's home summer.

A Remarkable Career of Nearly Two Decades

Devine's journey in ODIs began in 2006 when she debuted at the age of 17. Over the years, she has built an impressive legacy, establishing herself as one of the most reliable allrounders in the sport. Currently, she ranks second on New Zealand's all-time list for the most ODI matches played, trailing only Suzie Bates.

In terms of batting, Devine stands fourth among New Zealand's all-time highest ODI run-scorers and is on the verge of surpassing 4000 runs during the World Cup, which would elevate her to third place on the list, ahead of Debbie Hockley. She has also scored eight centuries in ODIs, the second-most for New Zealand women, following Bates.

Focus on T20 and International Leagues

Although she is retiring from ODIs, Devine is not finished with international cricket. She has expressed her intention to continue representing New Zealand in T20Is, allowing her to balance international commitments with various franchise league engagements worldwide.
