Ravi Shastri Expresses Emotions Over Virat Kohli's Test Retirement

Ravi Shastri's Emotional Response to Kohli's Retirement

Ravi Shastri has been closely associated with Virat Kohli's journey in Test cricket. Having observed Kohli's evolution from his early days to his significant achievements, Shastri has been a witness to one of the most remarkable careers in Indian cricket. Therefore, when the announcement of Kohli's retirement from Test cricket surfaced, it was understandable that Shastri was deeply affected.

Shastri's Reflections on Kohli's Decision

In a pre-series discussion on Sony Sports, prior to India's five-Test series against England, Shastri, who is typically calm and self-assured, showed visible emotion while discussing Kohli's retirement. He revealed that Kohli had hinted at this decision during a private conversation back in April. However, with the official announcement, the reality struck hard.

“Virat has declared his retirement from Test matches, which is unfortunate because he is an exceptional player. It’s only after someone leaves that people truly appreciate their greatness. Statistics don’t capture the essence — it’s about how he represented Test cricket, especially on foreign soil. His performance at Lord’s and how he led his team to victory was extraordinary. I’m grateful to have been part of it,” Shastri remarked.

Shastri's Thoughts on Farewell Management

Shastri expressed that Kohli, regarded as a key figure in modern Test cricket, deserved a more fitting farewell. He criticized the manner in which the retirement was handled, suggesting that it could have been approached with more respect and communication.

“I feel disheartened that his departure was so abrupt. It could have been managed better, perhaps with more dialogue,” he stated.

Missed Opportunities in Leadership

“Had I been in a position to influence, I would have reinstated him as captain right after the Australia series,” he added.

Shastri's comments hinted at a missed opportunity, suggesting that the BCCI selectors could have considered bringing Kohli back as captain. There were rumors about a senior player being ready to lead again, widely believed to be Kohli, but the selectors opted for Shubman Gill as the new Test captain of India.
