Tharoor's Response to Party Criticism

On Friday, Shashi Tharoor, a prominent Congress leader and head of the all-Party Delegation, addressed the backlash he received from fellow party members regarding his recent comments. He mentioned that he is not expecting any specific feedback as he has not received direct communication. Tharoor pointed out that much of what he is aware of comes from media reports, some of which he considers speculative. He emphasized that the delegation was cohesive, well-prepared, and effectively communicated the details of the Pahalgam terror attack, including Pakistan's involvement and India's Operation Sindoor response.

Tharoor's Statements

In an interview, Tharoor indicated that he would address the concerns raised by Congress leaders upon his return to India. He stressed the importance of recognizing the unity demonstrated by the all-party delegation at this time.

“There will be a time for internal discussions when I return. I’m not expecting anything because I haven’t been informed directly. What I see is mostly in the media, and some of it is speculative. However, I believe we are currently in a situation where the country is united, and that unity was clearly visible in the delegation,” Tharoor stated.

Earlier, on June 1, Tharoor had underscored the mission of their outreach, which aimed to convey India's firm stance on terrorism and its responses during discussions with international counterparts. He reiterated that the nation stands united at this moment.

Background of the Controversy

Tharoor faced criticism from several party leaders who labeled him a 'Spokesperson for the BJP' due to his recent remarks made in Panama. He mentioned that India has shifted its approach in recent years, making it clear that terrorists would face consequences. While he aimed to reaffirm India's position against terrorism, his references to the Uri Surgical Strike and Balakot Air Strike, both executed during PM Modi's administration, did not sit well with some Congress members.

Leaders like Udit Raj, Pawan Khera, and Jairam Ramesh expressed their discontent, accusing Tharoor of damaging the party's image and undermining the achievements of the UPA in combating terrorism.

Udit Raj remarked, “Shashi Tharoor is acting as a spokesperson for the BJP, promoting what BJP leaders are hesitant to say. Does he even understand the actions of previous governments? The current administration is taking credit for the Indian Armed Forces' efforts. Tharoor has become a mouthpiece for the BJP's publicity stunts.”
