Protests Erupt Against General Asim Munir

Pakistani General Syed Asim Munir encountered significant embarrassment during his visit to Washington when he was met with protests. A group of Pakistani demonstrators gathered outside his hotel, voicing their discontent with loud slogans.

As Munir exited the hotel, protesters shouted phrases such as 'Pakistaniyon ke qatil,' 'You are a coward,' and 'Shame on you.' They attempted to breach the hotel premises but were restrained by security personnel, leading to heated exchanges.

Reports indicate that the demonstration was organized by supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who had announced their intentions prior to Munir's arrival.

Sharing footage of the protest on social media platform X, PTI remarked, 'Pakistani-Americans in Washington, DC are protesting outside the Four Seasons hotel, reminding General Asim Munir of the crimes he’s committed against the people of Pakistan.'

The protest video displayed a screen featuring Asim Munir's image alongside messages such as 'Mass Murderer Asim Munir,' 'Democracy dies when guns speak,' and 'Asim Munir, your time is up. Pakistan will rise.'

In May, the Pakistani federal cabinet had approved the promotion of General Asim Munir to Field Marshal, despite facing military and strategic challenges during conflicts with India. The government justified this elevation by citing his leadership during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos and the confrontation with India, referred to as Marka-i-Haq.

Despite the military setbacks, the Pakistani government portrayed the situation as a 'historic victory,' commending General Munir's leadership. He became only the second officer in Pakistan's history to achieve the rank of Field Marshal.

The first Field Marshal of Pakistan was Ayub Khan, who served as president from 1958 to 1969. His promotion to this prestigious rank was self-appointed following his coup and subsequent presidency in 1958.
