Jos Buttler Supports Shubman Gill as India's New Test Captain

Buttler Endorses Gill's Leadership Ahead of Test Series
Jos Buttler, the all-rounder from England, has shown his support for Shubman Gill as the upcoming Test captain for India. He praised the young batsman's leadership qualities ahead of the crucial Test series starting on June 20. At just 25 years old, Gill is stepping into the captaincy role following Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket, marking his debut as captain in the five-match series against England.
Reflecting on Gill's promotion to captain, Buttler, who shared a dressing room with him at Gujarat Titans during IPL 2025, expressed confidence in Gill's ability to lead effectively in the red-ball format.
Buttler noted, 'There’s a lot of excitement surrounding this series. The IPL has just concluded, but even during that time, there was significant interest in who would take over as India’s next captain. Shubman Gill is now at the helm. He was my captain at Gujarat Titans—an impressive player and a very mature young man,' during a podcast with Stuart Broad.
He further elaborated on Gill's character, stating, 'He remains calm and composed in his speech. However, on the field, he exhibits determination and intensity. He is passionate about the game. I believe he embodies a blend of Kohli's aggression and Rohit's composed demeanor. Shubman seems to find a balance between the two, having learned from both while also establishing his own identity.'
