JNU's New Gender-Neutral Terminology

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has made a significant decision to change the term 'Kulpati' to 'Kulguru' as part of its commitment to gender inclusivity.

'Guru is the Appropriate Term for Academic Leadership'

According to JNU's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, 'Kulguru' is a gender-neutral term that accurately reflects the role of an academic leader. She emphasized that 'Guru' is universally recognized across various Indian languages, while 'Pati' carries connotations that may not align with modern values. This change aims to foster a more inclusive environment.

Proposal for Gender-Neutral Title

The initiative to adopt 'Kulguru' was introduced by Prof. Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit during a recent executive council meeting. As reported, she highlighted that this term is rooted in the ancient Guru-shishya tradition and is more fitting for the head of a university.

Advocating for Gender Sensitivity in University Policies

Prof. Pandit, who is the first female Vice-Chancellor of JNU, has consistently advocated for gender-sensitive reforms within the institution. Since assuming her role, she has promoted the use of gender-specific pronouns in official communications.
