Harry Brook's Near-Century: A Disappointing Exit at Headingley

Harry Brook Falls Short of Century in First Test
In the opening Test match between India and England at Leeds, Harry Brook narrowly missed out on a century, getting dismissed for 99 runs. Brook, who played a composed innings, was left disappointed as he fell just one run short of reaching the three-figure mark at his home ground, thanks to a catch by Shardul Thakur. This incident occurred shortly after the drinks break during the second session on Day 3, when Prasidh Krishna claimed the crucial wicket of Brook. The English batsman attempted to hit a bouncer but ended up giving a catch to Thakur, who unfortunately could not capitalize on the opportunity.

Brook's disappointment was palpable as he realized he had missed a century at his home ground. This dismissal placed him in an unfortunate category, as he became the third player in Headingley's history to be out for 99 runs. The previous players to achieve this dubious distinction were Mike Atherton and Saleem Malik. Atherton's dismissal occurred against South Africa in 1994, while Malik fell victim to the same fate in a match against England in 1987.
Earlier on Day 3, Brook had faced challenges, being dismissed twice before. He had edged a delivery from Ravindra Jadeja at 46 runs, but wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant failed to catch it. Later, he edged another ball from Jasprit Bumrah at 82 runs, which was dropped by Yashasvi Jaiswal. Additionally, Brook had been dismissed for a duck by Mohammed Siraj but was given a reprieve due to Bumrah's no-ball.
