Restoration Plans for North Chennai Ponds

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced a project to rejuvenate 41 ponds situated in the northern regions of Chennai, specifically in Thiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, and Tondiarpet, with an estimated budget of ₹119.12 crore.


The restoration efforts will encompass activities such as desilting, deepening, reinforcing bunds, and erecting retaining walls. The Manali zone will experience the most extensive work, with 28 ponds being restored at a projected cost of ₹58.43 crore. In Thiruvottiyur, four ponds are set for restoration, costing approximately ₹28.9 crore.


In Madhavaram, four ponds will be revitalized with an estimated expenditure of ₹11 crore. Meanwhile, Tondiarpet will receive ₹20.97 crore for five restoration projects.


Additionally, the GCC is directly managing five more pond restoration initiatives, with a budget of ₹25.25 crore sourced from its capital fund. To further address flooding issues, the GCC has introduced four new ponds in the Guindy area, which will have a combined storage capacity of 2.28 lakh cubic meters.
