This meeting marked a significant step towards resuming full diplomatic services, effectively resolving the tensions that arose following the assassination of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. Both leaders emphasized the necessity of strengthening their diplomatic ties, indicating a mutual desire to mend previously strained relations.

Appointment of New High Commissioners

Following their discussions, India and Canada reached an agreement to appoint new high commissioners. Canadian PM Carney remarked, "We will move to appoint High Commissioners again." He described the meeting as a crucial foundational step, highlighting the importance of open dialogue regarding law enforcement and transnational issues. Carney expressed optimism about rebuilding a relationship grounded in mutual respect and trust.

Strengthening Historic Ties

During the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, both leaders reflected on the robust historical ties between their nations, discussing collaborations in the Indo-Pacific region, economic growth, and supply chain partnerships. Carney noted PM Modi's consistent participation in G7 Summits since 2018, attributing it to the significance of India's economy and its technological advancements on the global stage.

Looking Ahead

Carney stated, "As Chair of the G7, hosting the Prime Minister in that context is entirely natural, entirely consistent. I fully expect the Prime Minister of India to be in attendance at the G7 in France next year." In a follow-up, PM Modi expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality received during his visit, stating, "Concluding a productive Canada visit. Thankful to the Canadian people and Government for hosting a successful G7 Summit, which witnessed fruitful discussions on diverse global issues.
