Dharavi Redevelopment Project: Aiming for Housing and Livelihoods

Dharavi Redevelopment Project Overview
SVR Srinivas, the CEO of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), stated on Tuesday that this initiative is crucial for the redevelopment of Mumbai, focusing on housing and employment opportunities. In a recent interview, he elaborated on the project's goals, which also prioritize the establishment of resilient infrastructure and ecological systems.
“Our vision is to create a slum-free Mumbai, which is part of a larger goal to achieve a slum-free Maharashtra and ultimately a slum-free India,” he remarked.
“Our motto is housing for everyone. We aim to ensure that no one is excluded from this housing initiative. This is the most inclusive Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) project ever launched in India,” he added. The Dharavi Redevelopment Project represents a significant urban renewal effort for the financial capital of India, intending to convert Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia, into a modern, integrated township.
Commitment to Sustainable Development
Srinivas highlighted the government's steadfast dedication to transforming one of Asia's largest informal settlements into a sustainable urban environment. He emphasized that the DRP is not only about providing shelter but also about safeguarding livelihoods.
“The key aspects of this project include providing housing for all and protecting livelihoods. This initiative is more about livelihoods than anything else. I consider this project a movement, as such an undertaking has never been seen in our urban redevelopment history,” Srinivas stated.
The DRP is being executed through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under a public-private partnership (PPP) framework, with the Adani Group collaborating with the Government of Maharashtra.
Housing Specifications and Approval
All eligible residents in Dharavi are set to receive flats equipped with independent kitchens and bathrooms, each measuring at least 350 square feet, which is 17% larger than the standard in other slum redevelopment projects in Mumbai.
The ambitious Dharavi Redevelopment Project received the green light from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis last month. The proposed master plan aims to enhance the existing features of Dharavi and create a world-class district for its residents, reimagining a new core for Mumbai.
Transformative Goals of the Project
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) presents a unique chance to improve the living and working conditions of Dharavikars, aspiring for a better quality of life through enhanced infrastructure and public facilities. According to the Dharavi Master Plan, the project is founded on three guiding principles: promoting economic transformation through redevelopment, establishing resilient ecological and infrastructural systems, and fostering equity within Dharavi.
The initiative will feature a network of green and public spaces, including expansive city parks and smaller community playgrounds, ensuring that every resident has access to vibrant, walkable areas. This network is designed to bolster ecological resilience and improve the daily quality of life in Dharavi.
A significant public open space is being planned at the heart of Dharavi, which will cater not only to the recreational needs of local residents but also serve the broader Mumbai community.
