Air India Plane Crash: Ongoing investigations into the tragic Air India plane crash have led to the successful matching of DNA samples from 125 victims. Gujarat's Home Minister, Harsh Sanghavi, announced on Monday that the remains of 83 individuals have been returned to their families. Efforts are underway to contact the families of 124 victims.
On June 18, the Minister visited the DNA testing facility in Gandhinagar, where teams from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) are conducting the analyses. Sanghavi commended the teams for their dedicated work around the clock. By 10:58 PM on Monday, DNA matches for 131 individuals had been confirmed, with six additional certificates prepared for dispatch to the Civil Hospital shortly thereafter.
The Home Minister noted that senior police officials and FSL personnel were overseeing the process late into the night. He emphasized that the teams had worked tirelessly over the last three days to ensure that the remains were returned to the families as quickly as possible.
The Air India flight, which was headed to London, tragically crashed on June 12 in the Meghani Nagar area near Ahmedabad airport. Eyewitness accounts described thick smoke billowing from the crash site. The aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Out of the 242 individuals on board, only one survived the incident shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad.
