Tata Sons' Support for Victims' Families
On Thursday, N Chandrasekaran, the chairman of Tata Sons, declared a compensation of Rs 1 crore for the families of each individual who lost their life in the Air India crash. The company will also cover medical expenses for the injured and ensure they receive all necessary medical care.
Tata Group's Statement on the Tragedy
The Tata Group expressed its sorrow on social media, stating, "We are profoundly saddened by the tragic incident involving Air India Flight 171. Words cannot fully convey the grief we are experiencing. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones and those who have been injured. Tata Group will provide ₹1 crore to the families of each victim and will also take care of the medical expenses for the injured. Furthermore, we will assist in the development of the B J Medical's hostel. Prime Minister Modi's Condolences
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow regarding the tragic event in Ahmedabad, describing it as "heartbreaking beyond words." In a post on social media, he extended his condolences and promised support to those impacted. He has been actively monitoring the situation and is in regular contact with state officials.
"The tragedy in Ahmedabad has left us stunned and saddened. It is truly heartbreaking. My thoughts are with everyone affected. I have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those impacted," the Prime Minister stated.
Details of the Air India Flight Incident
Air India confirmed that flight AI171, which was headed to Gatwick in London, was involved in an accident shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which was carrying 242 individuals, including 12 crew members, crashed shortly after its departure. The aircraft collided with a doctors' hostel located near the airport's perimeter.
Among the 230 passengers, there were 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian.
Flight Command Details
The aircraft was piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, with First Officer Clive Kundar assisting. Captain Sabharwal has an extensive flying experience of 8200 hours, while the co-pilot has logged 1100 hours.
According to air traffic control, the aircraft took off from Ahmedabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23. It issued a Mayday call but subsequently failed to respond to further communications from ATC. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft crashed outside the airport perimeter, with heavy black smoke visible from the site.
