Keshav Maharaj Expresses Emotion as South Africa Nears Historic ICC Title

South Africa's Historic Journey in the WTC Final

As Day 3 of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025 unfolded at Lord's, South African spinner Keshav Maharaj shared his heartfelt emotions, emphasizing that a victory would hold immense significance not just for the players but also for the loyal fans who have stood by the team through various challenges.

The Proteas are on the verge of clinching their first ICC world title, bolstered by a remarkable century from Aiden Markram and a solid half-century from captain Temba Bavuma. By the end of Day 3, South Africa had reached 213/2, needing just 68 runs for a historic win with eight wickets remaining.

In an interview with ICC Digital after the day's play, Maharaj remarked, "This victory would mean everything, not only for us as players or the fans present but for everyone back home. It has taken so long for our country to hold an ICC final trophy."

Overwhelmed with emotion, he continued, "I apologize for getting a bit teary-eyed, but being part of this moment would be a privilege. Our country has faced numerous challenges, and to be so close to achieving this is incredibly special."

Markram concluded the day unbeaten on 102, providing stability to the innings, while Bavuma, despite dealing with a hamstring injury, showed remarkable determination to remain not out on 65.

Earlier, a crucial partnership between Markram and Wiaan Mulder laid the groundwork for South Africa's pursuit of 282 runs. Australia began Day 3 at a precarious 152/9 but was lifted by an outstanding performance from Mitchell Starc, who scored an impressive 58 not out, helping Australia reach 207 all out and setting a challenging target for South Africa.

As the final approaches its climax, the Proteas are on the cusp of ending their long wait for an ICC trophy.
