Reflecting on a Remarkable Journey

Ashish, your journey has been quite remarkable, hasn't it?

I am incredibly thankful for the chance to connect with so many lives through my work in films. First and foremost, I feel immense gratitude for this opportunity. Over the past thirty-five years, I have experienced significant personal growth, all thanks to cinema. What began as a theatre actor in Delhi has transformed into a career spanning over eleven languages and more than 350 films.

The Impact of 350 Films

350 films?!

Indeed! (laughs) I've played some significant roles throughout my career. Films like Ziddi and Bichhoo received great audience appreciation. Additionally, Govind Nihalani’s Drohkaal and Sudhir Mishra’s Iss Raat Ki Subah Nahin were critically acclaimed. However, I am now eager to find that next milestone to celebrate. While I cherish my past work, I am excited for a central role that can showcase my abilities. The recent projects I've been involved in, like Nikhil Bhat’s Kill, Ranneeti, and Khufiya, have been well-received, but I am still on the lookout for that pivotal role.

Seeking Central Roles

What types of roles are you currently interested in?

Recently, I've taken on many important roles, but I am yearning for a central character that can truly highlight my talent. I want to demonstrate that I can lead a film or project. I have a variety of roles within me, and while I have often portrayed negative characters, my recent venture into stand-up comedy has been refreshing.

Embracing Stand-Up Comedy

How has your experience with stand-up comedy been?

I began my stand-up comedy journey at the age of 58, launching Sit Down Ashish on March 31st. Since then, I've performed over fifteen shows nationwide. It’s been surprising for both myself and the audience to see someone known for strong or negative roles bring humor into their life. The audience has responded positively to this new persona, and I enjoy delivering clean comedy that appeals to all ages without resorting to profanity or inappropriate content.

A New Chapter in Love

You recently followed your heart and married your beloved?

Yes, I have followed my heart and married the woman I love. This decision has reignited my dreams and belief in love. I feel fortunate to have found Rupali, and we both had the courage to embrace remarriage, despite societal judgments. We simply pursued what we desired.

Facing Societal Expectations

Were you concerned about what others might think?

Many people hesitate to pursue their true desires due to fear of judgment. I once told a friend not to write my resignation letter for life. I believe that at any age, one should aspire to create something meaningful. After marrying Rupali, we have been traveling, capturing stories through vlogs, and enjoying life together. This has also inspired my stand-up comedy, where I share humorous stories about life’s challenges.

Reflecting on His Journey

Are you satisfied with your journey so far?

In life, you will always have favorites and those you don’t connect with. This is true in any industry, including film. The key is to believe in yourself and become someone others want to work with. I have faced challenges, but I continue to pursue my passion and seek roles that resonate with me.

Looking Ahead

What’s next for you in your career?

I remain open to new opportunities and exciting roles. Currently, I am traveling across the country with my stand-up comedy show, Sit Down Ashish. Additionally, I am preparing for a storytelling show titled Zindaganiya, Zindagi ki Kahaniya, which will feature musical conversations with the audience. I am grateful for the chance to travel, meet new people, and share stories with Rupali by my side. Change is always happening in the present, and I strive to replace any regrets with proactive steps toward my goals.
