Shreyas Iyer's Omission from India's Test Squad Surprises Many
Shreyas Iyer Left Out of India's Test Team for England Tour
India's Test squad for the upcoming tour of England, commencing on June 20, has been announced, and the notable absence of Shreyas Iyer has raised eyebrows. Currently leading the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2025, Iyer's exclusion has puzzled many, including PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting. Ponting expressed his belief that Iyer is eager to demonstrate the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, wrong. This sentiment came after Iyer's impressive performance that led Punjab to the IPL 2025 final, where they triumphed over the Mumbai Indians in a nail-biting match.
“I was genuinely disappointed… but he has taken it in stride and moved forward,” Ponting remarked. “He possesses a strong desire to excel every time he represents us and is focused on winning matches while evolving into the best leader and captain he can be.” Ponting shared these thoughts during an ICC Review last week.
“Other players selected for the Test squad have earned their spots through solid first-class performances and successful IPL seasons, and Shreyas has matched their efforts,” Ponting added.
“I was hopeful he would be included, so it was disheartening to see him left out. However, this might fuel his determination as we approach the playoff games,” he noted.
Shreyas Iyer has been an outstanding captain, leading three different teams to the IPL finals, a remarkable achievement. His crucial 87 runs against the Mumbai Indians secured PBKS's place in the IPL 2025 final, and he is now focused on breaking Punjab's trophy drought.
