Iyer's Impressive IPL Season Boosts Captaincy Prospects

Shreyas Iyer has positioned himself as a leading candidate for the captaincy of India's white-ball teams after an outstanding performance in IPL 2025, where he guided Punjab Kings to a remarkable runner-up finish. His exceptional leadership and batting skills have drawn the attention of key figures within the BCCI.

BCCI Considers Iyer for Leadership Role

As Indian cricket transitions following the retirements of prominent players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from T20Is and Test matches, the BCCI is evaluating new leadership options. Although Iyer has been a consistent member of the ODI squad, his appearances in Tests and T20Is have been limited recently.

However, a report indicates that the BCCI is seriously contemplating Iyer's return to both formats beyond ODIs. A senior official from the board mentioned that Iyer is now officially in the running for the future captaincy of India's white-ball teams.

The official stated, 'Currently, he is only part of the ODI squad, but given his IPL performance, we cannot ignore him for T20Is or even Tests. He is now officially in the white-ball captaincy race,' just before the IPL 2025 final.

Iyer's Leadership and Performance

Iyer's recent leadership achievements in the IPL have been remarkable. After leading Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title in 2024, he took over the Punjab Kings and led them to the finals in 2025, showcasing his consistency as both a captain and a player. His graceful batting style and composure under pressure have strengthened his case for inclusion in all formats and potentially a leadership role at the national level.

As Indian cricket aims to nurture its next generation of leaders, Iyer's recent successes could play a crucial role in determining his future within the national team.
