Maharashtra's New Expressway Initiative

The Maharashtra government has recently allocated ₹20,787 crore for the ambitious 'Maharashtra Shaktipeeth Expressway' project. This expressway is set to traverse through 12 districts, linking eastern Maharashtra with the southern Konkan region. Once completed, the travel duration from Nagpur to Goa will be significantly reduced from 18 hours to just 8 hours.

Spanning 802 kilometers, the expressway will commence at Pawanar in the Wardha district and extend to Patradevi at the Maharashtra-Goa border in Sindhudurg district. This high-speed route will connect several districts, including Wardha, Yavatmal, Hingoli, Nanded, Parbhani, Beed, Latur, Dharashiv, Solapur, Sangli, Kolhapur, and Sindhudurg.

The decision was made during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who emphasized the need for dialogue with farmers to address any land acquisition concerns.

This expressway will also link significant religious sites across the state. Officials indicate that the project aims to connect vital pilgrimage locations such as Mahur, Tuljapur, Kolhapur, and Pandharpur, along with historical and sacred sites like Ambajogai, Aundha Nagnath, Parli Vaijnath, Karanja-Lad, Akkalkot, Audumbar, and Narsobachi Wadi.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will oversee the implementation of this project. Approximately 7,500 hectares of land will be needed for acquisition, with HUDCO approving a loan of ₹12,000 crore to facilitate this. Officials believe that this initiative will enhance connectivity to all Shaktipeeths in the state and foster rural development through tourism.
