Jewar Airport: India's New Aviation Hub Nears Completion

Jewar Airport, also known as Noida International Airport, is on the verge of completion, featuring one runway and a terminal ready for its first flight. This landmark project, developed by Zurich International AG, is set to become India's first fully foreign direct investment aviation project, with plans for six runways and terminals to accommodate 225 million passengers annually. The airport aims to alleviate congestion at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport and is strategically located near major expressways. With multimodal transport integration and conflict-free land acquisition, Jewar Airport is poised to transform the civil aviation landscape in India, serving as a key gateway for domestic and international travel.

Jewar Airport's Progress and Future Prospects

The Noida International Airport, commonly referred to as Jewar Airport, is nearing completion in Gautam Buddha Nagar, with one runway and a terminal ready to handle its inaugural flight. This project is being developed by Zurich International AG, with the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) overseeing the development activities, ensuring adherence to international completion timelines as mandated by the authority.

This airport marks a significant milestone as it is set to be India's first fully foreign direct investment (FDI) project in the aviation sector. Once completed, it will feature six runways and six terminals, with an anticipated annual capacity to accommodate 225 million passengers, aligning with future demand.

The expansion of Jewar Airport is expected to relieve congestion at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, which currently operates at full capacity, serving 80 million passengers each year.

Arunvir Singh, CEO of YEIDA and an aviation expert, emphasized the strategic importance of Jewar Airport in creating an international aviation hub. Located just 700 meters from the Yamuna Expressway and well-connected to major expressways including the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, the Lucknow–Agra Expressway, Ganga Expressway, and Meerut–Prayagraj Expressway, travel from Jaipur to Jewar takes approximately 2 hours and 21 minutes.

Before its official launch, the airport will integrate various modes of transport, including a rapid rail corridor, an extension of the Noida Metro, and a planned Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system. Furthermore, Indian Railways is developing an underground transport link connecting Jewar to the Amritsar–Kolkata corridor via the Chola line.

The state government has highlighted YEIDA's achievement in acquiring 6,000 hectares of land for the airport without facing any legal challenges or opposition, marking a significant success in conflict-free land acquisition. Jewar Airport is expected to not only enhance the National Capital Region's connectivity but also transform the civil aviation landscape in India, serving as a major gateway for both domestic and international travel.
