Vikram Bhatt Reflects on 27 Years of Ghulam: Insights and Memories
Vikram Bhatt's Reflections on Ghulam
Vikram, how do you view the journey of Ghulam over the past twenty-seven years?
Looking back at the last twenty-seven years, it's astonishing how quickly time has flown. It feels like just yesterday that we were working on Ghulam. The process of creating this film is a story in itself, and I might just pen a book about it.
Was Mahesh Bhatt initially involved in the project?
There’s an interesting backstory, but I’ll save that for my book. Mahesh Bhatt suggested to Aamir that he should direct Ghulam. At that time, there were two other directors in the mix—Tanuja and myself. Aamir opted to collaborate with me since we had a prior working relationship and were good friends.
What was your experience working with Aamir Khan?
Aamir is often labeled as Mr. Perfectionist, but that’s a bit misleading. He invests a lot of thought into his work. However, when he sees a director or writer equally dedicated, he feels more at ease, which leads to fewer lengthy discussions.
Did Aamir allow you creative freedom?
I recall filming a scene in Ballard Estate where I had a specific vision. I was putting in a lot of effort, and finally, Aamir joked, 'Yaar Vicky, I’m capturing the world while you’re capturing me.' We had a good laugh over that.
Was it challenging to persuade Aamir to sing?
Convincing Aamir to sing for 'Aati Kya Khandala' wasn’t difficult. While driving back from a shoot, I explained that the song would resonate better if he sang it, as it felt more like a dialogue. He agreed without hesitation.
Looking back, should Rani have dubbed her own lines?
In retrospect, yes, Rani should have voiced her own lines. But as they say, if hindsight could be bottled, it would be worth its weight in gold.
How do you view Ghulam in your body of work?
For me, Ghulam is a true labor of love. It was one of the most challenging films I’ve ever made. Honestly, it wouldn’t have been possible without Aamir’s unwavering support. He backed my decisions without question. Ghulam will always hold a special place in my filmography.
If given a chance, what would you change about Ghulam?
I wouldn’t change a thing. While no film is perfect, many perfect elements and talented individuals came together to create Ghulam, whether by chance or design.
