Pune Metro Phase-2: New Corridors to Enhance Connectivity
Union Cabinet Approves Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2
On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sanctioned Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project. This approval includes two elevated corridors: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi, which will extend the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi line. The initiative aims to improve East-West connectivity and link significant suburbs, IT hubs, and transport nodes throughout Pune, as stated by the Cabinet.
The approved corridors, known as Corridor 2A (Vanaz to Chandani Chowk) and Corridor 2B (Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi), will cover a distance of 12.75 kilometers and feature 13 stations. They will connect rapidly developing areas such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The project is expected to be completed within four years, according to the official statement.
The total estimated cost for this project is Rs 3626.24 crore, which will be equally funded by the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and various international agencies. This proposal is a natural progression of the existing Corridor-2 and is in line with the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), which aims to create a continuous metro corridor from Chandani Chowk to Wagholi to enhance mass transit in Pune.
Benefits of the New Corridors
As per the statement, these new extensions will cater to essential IT hubs, commercial districts, educational institutions, and residential areas, thereby increasing public transport usage and ridership across the metro network. The corridors will also connect at the District Court Interchange Station with Line-1 (Nigdi-Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi-District Court), facilitating seamless multimodal urban travel.
In terms of long-term mobility planning, intercity bus services from cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru will be integrated at Chandani Chowk, while services from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will connect at Wagholi. This will allow passengers to easily access Pune's Metro system. Additionally, these extensions are expected to alleviate congestion on major routes like Paud Road and Nagar Road, providing safe, fast, and environmentally friendly transportation options.
Upon completion of these corridors, the anticipated daily ridership for the entire Line 2 is projected to reach 0.96 lakh by 2027, 2.01 lakh by 2037, 2.87 lakh by 2047, and 3.49 lakh by 2057. The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will oversee the implementation of the project, handling all civil, electro-mechanical, and related works. Preliminary activities, including topographical surveys and detailed design consultancy, have already begun.
This strategic expansion is expected to unlock Pune's economic potential, improve urban transport infrastructure, and significantly contribute to sustainable and inclusive development across the metropolitan area.
